Information Privacy Research – Facebook

When thinking about what privacy policy I wanted to look more into, I decided on Facebook because it is something that almost everyone uses no matter what generation they are in. This policy can be found on the website so it is available for everyone to consider. On the website it says, “We collect the content, communications and other information you provide when you use our Products, including when you sign up for an account, create or share content, and message or communicate with others.” (Facebook) They want to use this information to personalize your account for others to see. Our information we put on Facebook is shared throughout the website in numerous ways including if you’re active or not and many more ways.

The first article I found, “What You Don’t Know About How Facebook Uses Your Data”, I found it crazy that even if you don’t have a Facebook account, they can still collect information from everyone and why is that? This is concerning and makes me wonder in all sorts of ways and made me wonder as I kept reading more into the article. It states, “Facebook collects biometric facial data without users’ explicit “opt-in” consent.”

The next article I found is titles, “Facebook monitors and tracks the locations of users it deems a threat” in this article it states that “Facebook monitors and tracks the locations of its users when the company’s security team finds that they are making credible threats on its social network.” (Kelly, 2019) I think it is great that Facebook as well as other websites watch as people post comments that could be threatening or are wrong. With Facebook tracking people’s location, it could be a good and bad thing all at once. It tracts when someone posts something threatening but I wonder if it is in the time of them posting it or on Facebook, so in this case it is a good thing.

I feel that there are many positives and negatives when it comes to Facebook’s privacy policy and this is probably for many other websites too. I do like how Facebook tracks and watches users who are using the website wrongly. I don’t like how they can track everything and everyone all the time even if they are not a user on the site. There are many pros and cons all throughout their policy including some that need to be fixed or looked over by someone new.

Copyright

In the article, “What educators should know about intellectual property” it states, “Fortunately for educators and librarians, U.S. copyright law allows for certain limitations on these exclusive rights for purposes that may be considered fair use, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.”This is all relates to me becoming an educator and having to work with copyrights. This article just shows that teachers and other people who are working with the internet to use as research need to be more aware of the copyright material. The law on copyright does have different exceptions for educators because they are the ones using it to educate the future.

This article relates back to the overall topic of digital citizenship which is what this class is because many people don’t realize that everything on the internet is copyrighted. It’s sad to say but everything in today’s world now is involved with technology and or internet. Everyone uses the internet to get information no matter what it is and many are not even aware of what copyright is. When digital citizenship comes to my mind, I think of a person who is developing a mindset of how to use the internet and other technology that we have in this world by using it in the correct way. Copyright is the main thing we deal with when it comes to digital citizenship because it is the understanding of that everything on the internet is coming from someone else’s creation that we can’t take credit for.

In a final, I think this article was important to read and eye opening too at the same time. I am currently a paraprofessional in multiple classrooms and hmany different teaching websites to help plenty of times as well as for my classes in college too. I have noticed that some material you use on certain websites you must pay for because the person who made it put in the time and effort so deserves that returning favor. I believe, when someone pays for material off any website someone is using, that it gives you access to not worry about copyright as much because they gave me permission to use their material and you are paying them for it.
